Safeguarding

This document is the **Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy 2025** for Fairhaven Preschool.

The policy statement confirms the preschool’s responsibility and commitment to protecting children from harm. Its primary purpose is to:

  • Protect children and young people who receive the preschool's services from harm

  • Provide staff, volunteers, children, and their families with the overarching principles that guide the preschool's approach to child protection.

It applies to everyone working on behalf of Fairhaven Preschool, including the Committee, staff, and volunteers. The document has been revised to reflect the latest statutory guidance, including *‘Keeping Children Safe in Education’* (2024).

Managing children who are sick, infectious, or with allergies

Fairhaven Preschool maintains a policy designed to promote health, prevent the spread of infections, and effectively manage allergies.

Managing Illness and Infection

The preschool reserves the right to refuse admittance to children who are unwell.
If a child becomes unwell while at the setting, staff will contact parents or authorised adults to collect the child.

The setting enforces specific exclusion periods for infections; for example, children must remain home for 48 hours following the last episode of sickness or diarrhoea.
Notifiable diseases are formally reported to Public Health England and Ofsted as required.

Medication and Emergency Procedures

The setting only administers prescribed medicines that are appropriately labelled; it does not provide Calpol or medications prescribed for the first time.
For life-saving or invasive medications, the setting requires a GP/consultant letter, written parental consent, and proof of staff training.

In severe emergencies, an ambulance is called. Staff must not transport children in private vehicles; a staff member will accompany the child to the hospital with their registration and medical details.

Allergy Management

Allergies are recorded on registration forms, and an allergy risk assessment is completed for each child.

Risk assessments detail the allergen, the nature of the reaction, medication procedures, and control measures. Generally, the setting is nut-free.

Admissions, Fees and Charges

Fairhaven Preschool aims to provide open and fair access to all families in the local community through clearly communicated procedures. This policy outlines the setting's commitment to inclusive practice, welcoming families from all backgrounds and supporting children with diverse needs.

It provides detailed information on:

  • Admissions and Enrollment: Outlines the registration process, including the requirement for birth certificates and how the waiting list is managed.

  • Government Funding: Details eligibility and application procedures for 2-year-old funding, as well as the universal and extended (30-hour) offers for 3- and 4-year-olds.

  • Fees and Charges: Explains the hourly rates for non-funded hours, the optional registration fee, and charges for additional services.

  • Optional Extras: Provides information on voluntary "consumables" fees that cover enhanced activities, snacks, and non-food items not included in basic government funding.

  • Operational Policies: Covers practical matters such as invoicing, late collection fees, and notice periods for withdrawing a child.
